Twitter Killed My Blog

Tonight we are hanging at the house. We just got home from hearing my kids at their first major concert. They did awesome!. I am sitting here listening to music and laughing with tam and Mandy. Tomorrow Mandy goes home. I’m bummed. It’s been a blast. the only thing that would have made this trip better is if Drew, her husband could have been here as well.

So, I was talking to Mandy about blog traffic. The reality is, my blog traffice has decreased 50% in the last two months. Now, I know I don’t post as much anymore, and when I do, it tends to be lighter than some of the intense conversations we’ve had here. But then she said it…”Twitter killed your blog”. She’s right! It did!

Now, if you don’t know what twitter is, go here and then go here.

But, I realize she was correct. Ever since Twitter took over, I blog less. I’ve always used this blog to get my thoughts out, to think through something in my head. Now I do that on Twitter. I say something, you guys respond and the thought is done.

But, I think I could do better at this. Twitter is a place to throw a quick thought out. But often, I need more time to mull it over. So I think I will use my blog as an extension to twitter. I have a thought. I bring it up. It takes notice. Gets a discussion. I then expand upon it on my blog. That sounds fun. Besides, I have 650 readers a day on twitter. Seems it is a good spot to begin my thoughts.

And no, the blog won’t decrease. I think it will actually increase now. Just with more purposeful direction.

Anyway, Mandy had a good thought. Thought I’d share it here, cause I needed more than 140 characters :)

Hmmm. You know, now that I think about it, I think Twitter killed my blog too!
I remember how high my stats were before I started Twitter and I’ve been wondering why they’ve gone down so much. It seems the more “popular”, I guess, I’ve gotten on Twitter, the less people read my blog. But I mean, it’s not like my blog was soooo popular in the first place ;]

Wow! I sure wouldn’t want the responsibility of having 650 people ready to read the first thought that pops into MY head and immediately filters down into words available online to all the world as well!

I prefer opting for the ‘considering carefully before I ’speak’ method’ instead (Prov. 10:19 & 17:27) — the other always gets me into trouble — or maybe it’s just MY thoughts, and you have yours all under control =}?

If you’re concerned with readership, WHATEVER you do, don’t move your blog: I lost 90% of my readership in my move, and it’s been months – still not back to normal yet. Sorta sad.

Shannon, I switched to self hosted last summer and I was fortunate to keep a bunch of people around, because I joined the 40 day fast at the same time. So I lucked out. I’ve heard some horror stories though.

Well, this is interesting. I have not gotten into Twitter, mainly because I just can’t figure out how to best use it along with my blog. I don’t know. Is it too embarrassing to admit that maybe, just maybe, I don’t get Twitter? But I’ve been thinking of giving it a go as a way to improve traffic on my blog…and now you say this…so confusing!

Photoqueen, Haha. If it is too confusing, don’t use it. And, No, it is not wrong for you to say you don’t get it. I know people who have been on Twitter for a while and they still don’t get it.

Twitter is all about networking. If you create a great network on Twitter, you will get more blog traffic. My problem, was I was creating a great network on Twitter and not writing posts. I am changing that now :)

The easiest way to get involved on Twitter is to create an account and start following people and just watch what happens. you’ll pick stuff up pretty quick. There are some great “how to’s” as well.
