Be whatever you want to be…really?
I heard this phrase the other day and it made me think. I don’t agree with it. That may sound harsh, but I don’t see it that way.
I see, realizing who you really are, as a beautiful thing. But I don’t see how living out, who you are and being whatever you want to be, can actually work together.
I know where my thoughts are coming from. But what about you?
What do you think?

so what youre saying is the two conflict with each other? one would be authentic and the other would not be “natural”?
oops. what do EYE think… i think if you tell a child he can be anything he wants to be and he wants to sing on broadway but his voice causes people to wanna jump off buildings, then youre setting him up for failure and ultimately responsible for a lot of peoples deaths.
thank you.
come again.

I like Tam’s example…
If you are not gifted for something, do you continue to try and slam a square peg into a round hole? I don’t think so at some point you have to realize that it just isn’t working. Kind of like the sinner getting to heaven. God though realizes we can’t do that or anything on our own.
And how does this correlate with the comment I left Tam yesterday? “continue being you. After all that is who God made you.”

Pushing 50, overweight, balding and poor – looking around at mortgage(s), grown children, ailing parents, station wagon, a lawn that needs raking…. I was supposed to be a wealthy and retired secret agent by this time, living on the Riviera and playing baccarat with a blond on one arm and a brunette on the other. Jeesh, is my aim bad or what?

C, Hahahaha!!!
I think you guys are seeing this the same as I am.
So how do we deal with a society that preaches this? And is the preaching and subsequent follow through, destroying our youth?
If we are cultivating a ‘pure and holy passion’ in ourselves and others to ‘know and follow hard after God’ then He will ‘give us the desire of our hearts (Ps. 37:4) and we will ‘be whatever HE wants us to be’ (more and more like Jesus – Rom. 8:29).
No matter what we started out ‘wanting to be’, He has beautiful (though often painful) ways of showing us how His plan is infinitely better!
And yes, it is diametrically opposed to the world’s way of SELF-focus (patterned after the ‘prince of this world’- Is. 14:12-14).

I’m not reading any comments before posting so I am sure to say something already said. (Okay…I will, BRB).
Your phrasing made me stop and think. We are told over and over again you can do anything you set your mind to, be anything you want to be. I think the problem comes in when we don’t ‘tag it’ (for lack of brainpower to find a better word) with, “Doing and being all the God calls us to”. We have to seek Him and His will for our lives. When we are walking closely with the Lord our hearts desire will change from our desire to the desire of His heart for our lives. We have to be careful to raise our children with that in place I think.

I agree with HLFM’s confirming thoughts (#7)too, and just read this from an email I received today that also affirms the sometimes ‘painful’ parts of God’s plan for becoming all HE wants us to be:
“Rudyard Kipling once said that if anyone did not get from life what they really wanted, it was because either he didn’t really want it or because he began to quibble about the price. That may be a bit of an overstatement, but I do think there’s a great deal of truth there. We must be willing to pay the price for what we want. The price for the Christian life is high, and Jesus wants us to count that cost as part of our decision to”*(know and)”follow”*(hard after)”Him.”
[*( )'s are my add-ons =].
D- just one of who He’s making me to be, no duplicate D’s this time =)
D- that quote is so good. Quibbling over the price…

I think, for those of us who have matched our made self with our Maker, this piece of advice can really work… In a weird sense, we’re gonna want to do and be what He made us to be. Once we’re sanctified and less corrupt by the world, once His Spirit fills and guides us, I think pursuing the desires of our sanctified hearts is a GREAT way to achieve our purpose.
Not the rebellious pot that told the potter he wanted to be something else. But the submitted pot that was trusting that he was made to be what he is.
Did that make sense? I think I need more coffee…

Mandy, you said that well. I agree completely.
HisLifeformine´s last blog post…I think healing is taking place
I think you guys have a great focus to this. I completely agree that if we are in Him, we are living to be all we can be…by His standards and His plan. I love that.
If it is not in Him, it is for selfish gain.
Being all we CAN be and what we WANT to be might be two different things. I used to really want to be a University of Alabama cheerleader or an Olympic gymnast. I am 5′7″ and although coordinated, it would have been almost impossible for me to have achieved these goals – I was not made for it. Many times we want to be something we are simply not made to become.
As we mature in Christ and come to an honest look at who we really are – strengths and limitations – we can more fully embrace who we were created to be. As our hearts grow in alignment with Gods heart for us and His purposes in this world, we grow towards a more “Reasonable and holy” desire for our life. I’m finding myself more truly excited about my dreams now than 20 years ago because they are in alignment with my “truest self” if that makes sense.
I am comfortable with that. It feels good.
Jan, I completely agree. well said.
