The Best and Worst of Halloween

Today, I look around the blog world and I see lots of thoughts, arguments and pictures.

Halloween…

What is it to you? I am not interested in whether or not this is a day Christians should or should not celebrate. I am pretty convinced for myself that I will be celebrating it.

But, what are you doing today? What are your favorite or worst memories of halloween?

For me, it’s all the great horror movies. I’ve grown up with them and love them. I watch them all month long. October is fun :)

So…now you…

    Movies too dude!

All the networks break out the classic (and not so classic) films. My DVR is full of ones I haven’t even had the chance to watch because of being at work. And I’m recording Ghost Hunters Live tonight. I can’t sit through six hours of it, but once it’s on DVR I can skip to the good parts (assuming something happens).

they’ve been running Ghost Hunter’s all week and it’s all day today. My kids and I love that show!

yes we KNOW you like the stupid horror movies. Tammy has informed us. Jake is in heaven in October when those STUPID movies come on. yuck.

The boys and I are going trick or treating tonight with some friends, people we knew in Missouri. They’re excited. I’m not big on Halloween…I hate carving pumpkins, adults look funny dressed up walking their kids around, and then the sugar high and candy wars that come the entire week after Halloween are always fun. ;-) I’m ready for NOVEMBER!

how is it you seem to consistently blog what i’m thinking about?

actually, scary movies (the really bad lifelike and gory ones today – not the cheesy old ones) are my biggest pause about the holiday. well, that and witchcraft. but i personally don’t like being scared like that. and, a lot of people deal with fear their whole life – is it different? i don’t know. i just posted my thoughts on halloween too. i imagine the link will be below if you want to hear the long answer to your question… including my favorite and worst halloween memories.

seriously, brent… outa my brain, mr! it’s weirding me out. ;)

I have just never been a fan of the gore, death, fright stuff… I like candy, just never understood what the point of going door to door to get it was/is for.

Watching horror movies…what an EXCELLENT idea!!

That should give you ample practice ‘developing a heart of compassion’ for the people you would otherwise be tempted to enjoy seeing hurt there =}!

    Happy nightmares (?),

    Tyler, your not lame :)

    tam, pass the candy…

carolyn, if I’m in your brain, then I’m in good company. Haha!

Steve, everyone can agree on the candy :)

nor, didn’t Donahue go off the air in like 88′

Darla, i love the dark ones!

D, Of course it will help. It’s all about saving the victims. I would be one that wants to get away…just to make that clear :)

I took Tam’s blog and turned it into a Haiku for her:

    I hate Halloween,
    and i hate horror movies,
    and i love candy.

I loved Halloween when I was in Junior High. My friends and I would get Vampire Blood and all sorts of ‘make up’ at Spencers and try to out gore each other. One time I was a machine gun shooting victim which was pretty cool. Other times we would just put assorted wounds on our faces and arms. Good times.

I too love a good horror flick, but I’m particular about them being older – the new ones these days just don’t make sense to me. I like the psycho thrillers best – the ones where you aren’t sure whodunit or what’s going on, or you think you know what’s going on and you really don’t. One of my favorites (and I’m still waiting for it to come out on DVD) is a movie called “Magic” with Anthony Hopkins. Old Vincent Price movies – good. And there’s a great old b-movie (the B stands for beat) called “Bucket of Blood.”

bad, I agree. I love the movies that have an element of suspense or a good twist. I am probably more a fan of the fright movies that deal with ghosts or the unknown. I am not as much a fan of the slasher movies. although, there have been a few I have really enjoyed because they were so well written or produced.

The first horror movie I ever say was Friday the 13th. Definitely a cheesy slasher movie. But after that i saw Halloween. That movie had a great storyline to it, plus much better suspense. That drew me in.

Today, I like watching a good thriller or suspense film. M. Night Shyamalan has produced a few good ones, but whatever you do, don’t waste your time on “the Happenings”. Lame. “Sixth Sense”, “Signs”, “The Village”. all great movies with great twists. Not really horror, but good stuff.

Not a big fan of the holiday, itself (nor all the candy). But I do love me some scary movies! Tonight, we’re going to watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978 version). I can’t wait!

never did like the horror flicks. For us it’s all about the kids. Our kids LOVE dressing up and LOVE trick or treating. So for us the fun is watching our kids have fun, and we love it!

I loved it when my kids were young. I used to carve all kinds of spooky Jack o’Lanterns and using make-up,costumes trick lighting and sound effects tried to scare the hell out of the kids when they came to our front stoop.

We still do the candy thing and it’s cute seeing all the little kids. It’s kind of sad and poignant; watching the older kids who are trying so hard to be cool (no costumes and avoiding uttering the words ‘trick or treat’) and still trying desperately to hang on to the fun things of childhood. Peer pressure can be so unforgiving.

I hate scary movies – I’m a big wimp. But I love candy – does that count for something?

The funniest Halloween memory that just came to mind was in sixth grade, when my friend Elizabeth went trick or treating with me and then washed her hair in our bathtub. She had dyed it black – and it completely stained my mom’s pristine tub. It was NOT funny then, but we still laugh about it now!
