A Weekend of Jazz

Thursday Oct 9, 2008

I am looking forward to this weekend. I will be the Front of House engineer for a whole weekend of Jazz. Every year our valley puts together the annual Jazz Jubilee. It really is a blast. There are 7 venues that seat anywhere from 50 to 750. I will be in the Craterian theater which seats 700. I can’t wait. I am able to hook up with one of the local sound companies for a couple gigs a year. It helps them out and I love doing it.

There are all varieties of Jazz at this event. Everything from a couple local acts to some wonderful national acts and everything in between. Traditional to New Orleans to some great modern Jazz as well. I am really anxious for a couple of groups. I love Gator Beat and I can’t wait for Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums. Both are non-traditional to say the least, but a blast to listen to and work with. It looks like my venue is hosting,”a Spotlight on Mel Torme” both Firday and Saturday. Should be interesting :)

Here is my schedule for the weekend.

FRIDAY:

SATURDAY:

SUNDAY:

I love that Sunday starts with a great gospel band. They’ve done this each year. We get to have church at the Jazz jubilee.

So, today we start setting up. I will take some pics of the rig. I’ve got some great gear to work with this year. Even better than when I ran sound at the fair. I’ll post each evening with high lights…or low lights of the day. Should be fun. Wish you all could be here hanging with me.

So, what are you favorite Jazz bands or artists? If you don’t like Jazz, what are your favorite bands or artists?

I think the closest thing to Jazz I have is a couple Norah Jones cd’s.. her voice is pretty great. But I love the sound of jazz. The raw sound of it live with the Brass horns.. is the best.

Tyler, I love running sound for blues. there are some great blues bands in this valley.

Adam, I am running for a band called the Queen City Jazz band. they are actually from New Orleans. they have a killer brass section and a seasoned front lady that has a voice to die for. Old, soulful and powerful. If you like Nora, you’d like them.

Dude, I’m insanely jealous. I wish I could be there! I was raised on a healthy diet of jazz, blues, swing, and military bands (spot the odd one out), so I’m heavily in to a lot of the first three.

Traditionally, I love the old timers - John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone etc.

I also like some traditional Latin jazz, like Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Joao Gilberto.

I’m not such a huge fan of modern jazz or improv/freestyle jazz, but I do like some David Sanborn, Pat Methany, Fourplay, Yellow Jackets and Cedric Simon.

Swing is a no brainer; Frank, Sammy and Dean are the kings, and I’ll dig some Harry Connick Jr often, as well as some other names from the big band era; Glen Miller definitely, Buddy Greco, Mel Torme, Oeggy Lee, Bobby Darin, Nancy Wilson etc.

And then blues. I’ll dig pretty much any good blues, from the big names like BB King, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, through modern day blues players like John Mayer and Derek Trucks.

One thing I REALLY like, and seems to be lesser known on this side of the Atlantic, is ‘French Touch’ jazz (sometimes known as Jazztronica). It’s essentially the fusing of live jazz musicians with beats and loops and deep house sounds. St. Germain are the kings of this (check out their albums ‘Boulevard’ and ‘Tourist’), but there are plenty of excellent artists out there; The Streetlife Originals, Solaris Heights, Trio De Janeiro, Ludovic Navarre etc. Also check the ‘Paris Under A Groove’ collection and the ‘St Germain Des Pres Cafe’ collection (not related to the other St. Germain.

Enjoy the weekend!
