I Got A Ticket!
I just have to vent for a moment. I even designed some really impressive pictures to help this make sense
I got a ticket yesterday. I made an illegal right turn. I used to live on the Southwest side of town. I used to travel down this road almost everyday and I made this turn over and over. It’s been about 3 years since I’ve lived in that area and so I never drive down this road. I happened to be driving in this area yesterday and made a turn I used to make all the time. When I turned, I saw a couple of cop cars with their lights on. One had a car pulled over and another was coming towards me going the opposite way. The one coming toward me did a quick U turn and began to follow me. He had his lights on before I got to him and I just thought he was turning around to help the other cop car. But he kept following me, so I pulled over to let him by and he pulled over with me. I had no clue what was going on. I hadn’t done anything…that I was aware of. The cop asked for my stuff and then explained to me why he pulled me over. They had just changed the lane at the right turn I made. It is now illegal to do what I did. “Did you know this” he asked me. I told him I had no idea. I did not know about the new change. Then he told me, “well we are ticketing people to let them know about the changes.” WHAT?!?! Your informing me about changes by giving me a ticket. Not a warning, a ticket. A $242 ticket!
Ok, here’s what happened. This is a drawing of the corner showing what the turn lane looked like and how we used to pull up to the intersection, veer to the right and make the turn.
This next picture shows what the intersection looks like now. Exactly the same only with some new white lines.
Now, in my attention to detail, I made sure to show you how there is absolutely ZERO signage to let anyone know about the new changes or whether or not the turn could be made. I guess the new white lines make it illegal.
The cop told me there was an unmarked car at the corner and as people turned illegally, he would radio the two cruisers and they would pull us over.
Doesn’t this seem a bit extreme? Should they be ticketing or warning? This is a new change and people are basically being picked out at random (cause they can’t pull everyone over) and being made an example of, all for the sake of us knowing that we can’t turn like this anymore.
I was ticketed in a sting…for illegal turns…
So, my rant has ended, you are free to take it up from here. I have a good record, so I will be calling traffic school and hopefully working off the ticket and it won’t cost me anything. We’ll see.
My friend Vince was kind enough to fill in some other details (that I am not sure actually happend) and he also posted a nice video to help us smile

Okay, so we’re still in the “southwest side”, so what streets are you referring to, so we don’t get caught too?
I’d guess McAndrews or Ross, but haven’t noticed anything so far.
So, what are you supposed to do — stop before turning, or go around the white lines or ???
‘Guess you were the ‘lucky’ one, but ‘glad you might be able to work it off.
We’d pay you for the ‘tip’ with veggies, but it sounds like your mom is giving you everything you’d ever want or need.
D-
D, it was 238 headed East at Ross Lane. I think you’ll see it if you go there.
So wait, turning onto 238 from Ross Lane is illegal? Or is it just the way you did it? Like, was the ticket because you turned right or because you went over the white lines? Because that’s crazy. And I can’t believe they just gave you a ticket for something like that, with no warning or anything.
New lane change and no warning. That’s what gets me. They just wanted money.
It is illegal to turn the way I did, which is to drive over the newly painted white lines. You have to stay behind that car in front of you, you cannot turn from their right side.
That is bogus! That’s a clear example of the city trying to make up for some budget deficit or something. And to think that they’re targeting good people! Just to clarify, I’m not saying that you’re among the good people. But still…
I’m sorry about the ticket. At least they didn’t warn you by putting you in jail.

CD, no kidding. There is some crazy stuff going on around our country.
Hmm… thanks for the heads up! Good thing you didn’t get “Bubba” on a bad day. Then we would do a special offering to get you out of Jail.

Brent, I think it was 238 and SAGE Rd. I make that turn almost every day. Yesterday on my way home I saw the cops with 2 people pulled over (including a van from the radio station on that corner). I didn’t realize they were pulling over for making that turn. I didn’t even know what the white lines meant when they first put them there…Steve had to tell me. And since I’m a rule follower, I don’t ever pass cars on the right there anymore…however, I’ve had my right blinker on waiting patiently in line, and had cars try to pass me on the right. I don’t know why they don’t just put a turn lane in there…they have plenty of room.

Cheryl, why do I think you guys would leave me to stew for a while
Rachel, Don’t get tickets!
Kristen, your right, it is Sage. When we lived there, they didn’t have the lines, so it was legal, but now that they have the lines it isn’t. I agree that they should have a turn lane, there is more than enough room.
Dude that stinks. We were visiting NYC couple years ago and obviously you can’t turn right on red lights either. I got socked with a $285 ticket.. for a moving violation. It would have been cheaper if they would have pulled me over for speeding.

hey.. why didnt my avatar come up.. lets try this again..

Actually, I don’t think it’s ever legal to pass on the right like that to make a turn if there is not turn lane. It’s the same over by Taco Bell on Crater Lake HWY and Poplar. A lot of people use the shoulder to turn right onto Poplar from CLH, but I don’t think it’s legal. Is it??

Adam, that stinks. There should be some discretion for out of state visitors. Like u-turns. I moved to Oregon from Cali. In Cali a u-turn is always legal unless it says no u-turn. In Oregon it is always illegal unless it says u-turn ok. Talk about confusing!
Kristen, it’s legal if there is no line or the line follows the angle of the curb. Since they moved the line out straight it is illegal. The cop did take time to hold a turning class while I sat there. Nice.
Okay, I would feel bad if this didn’t remind me of the time I got a ticket b/c you and I were playing an innocent game of “tag” on 99 in front of church. Two weeks before I got married. The cop said I was riding your bumper, right after you cut me off after I zoomed up next to you to wave hi after you zoomed up next to me to wave hi. Yeah. And never speeding once I might add. Remember that? I cried hysterically when the cop told me I could be responsible for killing my own sister if I kept up that kind of bad driving.
So B, you could be responsible for killing my sister if you keep making previously allowable right hand turns at newly painted illegal areas.
I bet we had the same cop. Idiots.

You know I’ve got to give you a hard time
I remember that day. By the way, I’ve had fun hanging a bit with your sister this last week. Tam and I went out to Pony for lunch Friday.
oh you saw her huh? I haven’t talked to her in a couple of weeks. I need to call her. I know she’s busy working again and plus Scott is there now.
She’s cute with her hair cut. I love it!

Ok, we took that route to church this morning and we can’t figure out where you got stung… Now I re-read the comments and you mean you turned right from Sage onto 238! It’s the intersection where the “pre-owned vehicles”
are? Hmm… thanks for the heads up!
Cheryl’s last blog post…Canadian Health Care System – Continued
Pre owned vehicles…Haha!
It is that intersection, but it is if you turned right on sage instead of left (when you came to church).
Wow Illegal turns…now that’s what we need to waist 3 cops on.

I think you should go out tonight with some black paint and paint over the lines.

Uhhhh – are there ANY traffic control indicators (stop signs, red lights, etc) on that intersection?? it looks unbelievably dangerous to me?
How many lanes are there on Sage? two? three?? (two one-way and one the other?) or do you all just make a lane when and as you see fit?
And to top it all off you have pedestrian walk-ways across all four entrances?
Has anyone counted the number of crashes and near-death experiences at that one intersection in a year?
i get the foul taste left in your mouth from the way you ‘found out’ about the road change – i’m assuming you did not see the county’s clear public display of the impending road amendment regulation printed on the inside of the economy sized box of Cheerio’s available on sale between February the 6th and February 8th last year in all 7/11 stores huh?
