Hockey? or Walmart?
Posted by inWorship | Under Politics Thursday Sep 4, 2008I watched some of McCain’s speech tonight. It was as I suspected, a bit dull. Obama knows how to talk. But that kind of scares me as well
I am not one for the conventions. I am not into rhetoric and hype and both parties will be full of it during the conventions. (no pun intended)
We were watching CNN. I tried watching one of the big 3, but they wouldn’t quite talking. I turned it to CNN and no one was talking so I went with it.
Here’s where I am going. After the convention was over, I listened a little to the media’s opinion of the speech. I didn’t hear much I was surprised with. Eventually they started discussing what it will take for McCain to win. Then I heard this statement.
“He will have to win the vote of both the Hockey Mom and the Walmart Mom.”
What?
These commentators went on to explain what the hockey mom was. They even pointed out where they live in this country. They clearly described the hockey mom’s as the higher income influential women in the country. The walmart mom’s were not given a description, but were still used to describe a group of women.
What? Did they just call high income women hockey mom’s and low income women walmart mom’s?
Am I missing something here? Did they just place women into two categories, rich and poor?
Does this bother you? It’s bugging the crap out of me.

Hmmm…women in categories, I can’t imagine!
Am I embarrassing myself?
Totally being silly..does that help or hurt me? Your blog brings that out in me, I don’t know why!

I watched the speech on CSPAN and then switched to ABC but I didn’t stick around for the analysis.
Hockey moms are high income???? WHAT! They lost me on that one. I just thought hockey moms were the ones who woke up at the butt crack of dawn to take the kids to practise. Sat in the freezing cold arena until their kid was done and then took them to school. Unless they are talking about the expsense of hockey equipment, those commentators know squat! The hockey mom’s I know get their kids things second hand and if they buy new, they buy it from WALMART! Oh wait that’s in Canada. Wrong country again.
What a load of… excuse my French… Hockey pucks!

Tawny, you are truly in a category of your own
Cheryl, wrong country. Haha! It rubbed me the wrong way. But Tawny just made it all better
I guess it makes sense…hockey moms do represent the more wealthy family…hockey is really expensive to play. But yeah, I think the worst thing about politics is that it groups people. I am a “born again evangelical” to the analysts. But I also have a heart beat and a brain, I am more own person, not a group.

I meant “I am MY own person, not a group.” sorry.

Tyler, I am not surprised that the media would segregate or classify people, but it seemed to me to be an almost intentional degrading of women. It was weird. I’m with you though. I am much more than a classification. Our division in politics will never end if we continue an us vs them attitude. Of course I’m not surprised the media would encourage that. I mean, it sells more papers.
go get’em tiger
Wow, I hadn’t heard that classification before. While it does upset me, it doesn’t surprise me. The more diverse our society becomes the more we begin to put up walls and find further ways to push people groups apart. The media is definitely the worst offender.
Interesting! I didn’t know that Hockey Moms were wealthy…
I didn’t know that WalMart moms were poor…
I’m disturbed now. I heard alot of commentators last night and most of them disturbed me.
JudiFree.com’s last blog post…Prepare Ye the Way
When I read that, I read it as “hockey moms=rich democrats” and “walmart moms=poor republicans” but what I THOUGHT was “hockey moms=not smart for not saving a few bucks at walmart” and “walmart moms=smart shoppers.”
My mom HATES that Bush can’t deliver an eloquent speech. I kind of like it though. I know, call me crazy.
Okay, that was dumb. But seriously, I see what you’re saying. It just sounds like an idiot stuck his foot in his mouth and didn’t think AT ALL about what he was saying and how it came across to viewers.
And I hear ya on being scared that Obama knows how to talk.

I think I’m a Wal-Mart mom. Which sucks because Wal-Mart stresses me out and makes me cry.

According to Palin hockey moms wear lipstick. I guess the Walmart lipstick just isn’t as nice?

tam, thanks hun
Brad, it’s almost as if they think they are allowed to say and do things that are offensive.
Judi, I didn’t want to disturb you. I’ll try to post something that will make you smile to balance it all out
Brandy, I was telling some people last night that a speech means nothing to me. I just want to see someone back up what they say.
Brody, Haha! It makes me cry sometimes as well. Let’s start a group or something.
Chris, I love the sticker I saw this morning, “Read My Lipstick”. Haha!
hey. i need to run to wal-mart to get some hockey pucks. wanta go?

Ummm, Sure.
Who plays hockey? I guess that’s big in Minnesota, huh?
Brad Ruggles said, “The more diverse our society becomes the more we begin to put up walls and find further ways to push people groups apart. The media is definitely the worst offender.”
Gotta disagree - I think the church is the worst offender.
It doesn’t surprise me that the media is discussing demographics and segments of society. The politicians are DEFINITELY doing it.
Where I live the high-income moms are more likely to be lacrosse moms - but that’s because we don’t get much snow.
Brandy might have had the right interpretation with regard to female dems and republicans - maybe that was what they meant more than income.
Whether it is sinful to shop at walmart is a whole ‘nother issue that Believers need to consider - regardless of economic status. But that should be saved for another thread.
This reminds me…”Slap Shot” is On-Demand on cable this month. I gotta remember to watch it (classic hockey movie for all you women out there).

C, Haha. I would know. I was born in St Paul
We lived in the hockey capital of the U.S. of A.! Lake Placid, NY 1980 - 1985 - our son played hockey - they gave him a uniform, pads all the stuff. I think even the ice time was free. It was one of the cheapest sports our son played in at the time. I think what your hearing is political hype par excellence! They just don’t know what to do with this “hockey mom” !! The media is really digging a hole they may not be able to get out of!

Papa, let’s start with congress and then the media. Let’s renovate the whole thing
Bad, saved you from spam.
Really? I would say that many religious people live life like this, but I would hardly say they are the worst. They are one of many.
My point about the classification was not that it is happening, but that it was actual purposefully degrading. I haven’t heard that specific undertone from either candidate. They’ve said some stupid things, but after listening to the speeches, the media’s statement stood out the most.
Interesting. I’d love to read your post on this one. Sounds a little like Paul’s discussion about unclean pork.
Love this movie!
B, if a candidate/president give an great error free speech, all that tells me is they can read someone ELSE’S speech and put on a good show. Not always the greatest thing.

Brandy, I love the name of your latest blog post
Hey Brent,
My comment about the church being the worst offender - I was thinking about how many denominations we have and how we fight amongst ourselves. Substitute “churches” for people groups. Maybe we’re not the worst, but I think the condition reflects our fallen nature.
I am not surprised that the media was purposefully degrading - I see that all the time.
unclean pork….maybe. we’ll see what you think. My blog agenda is fast filling up this weekend!
