What Would You Do?

We moved into a house this Winter that backs up to a cool little city park. Another benefit of the house is that it has a pool. We are looking forward to taking full advantage of it this Summer.

So, I was talking to a neighbor yesterday and he asked if we were having any issues with kids in the park. Here is a pic of our house. As you can see, our back fence is the only thing that separates us from the park.

As, the neighbor and I were talking, he told me the previous tenant told stories of sitting in their living room and hearing loud noises and then splashes in their yard. They would go out back and find that kids had hopped the fence and were swimming in their pool. Now, I have my thoughts on what I’d do, but I want to hear from you.

What would you do if you found kids in your private back yard, swimming in your pool?

Hey, as much time as you guys are planning to spend out there this summer – you may be so bulked up with all that weight lifting just the mere thought of you might be enough to keep them on the other side of the fence. LOL

Keep at least 5 bags of shock in the pool at all times. Then just scour the neighborhood for the albino kids… problem solved.

Put a sign out that says “You can swim here, but please ask first, refreshments for those who do” :D

    Ohh… I got another one…

Accidentally leave an extension cord draped into the pool water when not in use…

    They’ll only do it once…

Seriously, We have a pool too. The only problem we ever had was when the neighbor kid (high school) had a party when mom and dad were away. A couple of drunk kids jumped the fence for a dip. A prompt call to the police took care of it nicely.

I like HW’s idea about the pet Alligator. :)

Darla is right you do need to post a warning, if only for the liability issue. I agree with you Brent the thought that someone could hurt themselves would worry me more.

Kids will find a way to get over or around the fence not matter what you do. All you can do is try and make it hard for them.

Finding out their names and talking to their parents is, if nothing else, a way to introduce yourself to your neighbors. Also you could take pictures of them and if it got to be too much of a problem you have the pictures to show the police like Papa suggest.

Papa’s idea about the “crazy lady” is also a good idea since it isn’t too far from the truth. :)
(Just kidding Tam. There is no need to track me down.) :)

It’s been a while back but Tam and Evan are clearly amateurs!

Filling the pool with acid is a no go for two reasons – one: it’ll stuff what’s left of your filtration system!

And Two: Acid is good for eliminating hair, nails, bone and protein but leaves a nasty icky residue of all the fatty tissues!

And it’s hard to scrape it all out off the bottom.

Don’t ask how i know – just trust Unca love on this one!

    Electric fence?

CJ, I had actually thought of that. Just a simple electric run (horse fence style) across the top of the fence. When they grab a hold to jump over, they are met with a surprise.

Brent, longtime reader. first time poster. You might want to keep in mind that teenagers think they are absolutely invincible. The kids that went up to the river a few weeks ago and and then one drowned, they thought they were good swimmers too. So, you have a respect issue (it’s not their property) and you have a basic safety issue. Whether these kids go somewhere else and hop another pool isn’t your issue. You cannot control that. But you should set some very careful guidelines for your family and possible visitors for the pool. And since when was is unkosher to expect kids to stay off your private property? Or to put systems in place to keep them out? I would post LOTS of signs on the outside of your fence and I would also put up the electric fence. Also, if you are renting, you need to talk to your landlord about that too.

imajackson, thanks for joining in and thanks for being a long time reader, I am honored!

You’ve got some great suggestions. I am actually going to run by our Grange coop tomorrow and check oon th electric fence options. That is a good safe deterrent. I am also going to make out some signs. I have to protect them as well as us.

Tam, save the acid thing for something else :)
